Taxpayers to Mayor Miller: Forget fishing for new revenues and get spending in check

Author: Neil Desai 2006/11/14
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today responded Toronto Mayor David Miller's demand for a sales tax transfer from the federal and provincial governments.

"Toronto must learn to stick to the basics, prioritize it's spending and live within it's means like every other municipality in the country," stated Neil Desai, Ontario Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. "Giving Mayor Miller another revenue source would be congratulating him for the cities poor fiscal record in recent years."

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has already stated that his government is in no position to offer the City of Toronto a one point transfer of the provincial sales tax (PST). Mayor Miller will now look to the federal government for a similar one point transfer of the Goods and Services tax (GST). Mayor Miller's sudden need for new revenue sources is a far cry from the message he was sending to the taxpayers of Toronto during the recent election campaign: He made little or no mention of the need for new revenue sources or the true state of city finances.

"First he gets the City of Toronto Act with new taxing powers - now he wants more. He dodged questions on using the new taxing powers but given the provinces denial of his latest request the answer seems obvious - Toronto taxpayers brace yourself for Mayor Miller's new taxes!" added Desai.
